Carlton Douglas Ridenhour ("Chuck D")

Who They Are:
Founder of Public Enemy
Born:
August 1, 1960 - present

Chuck D is the founder of the rap group Public Enemy and is widely accepted as one of the leaders of the political rap scene.  Prior to Public Enemy it was rare for a rap group to take on politically and socially controversial issues, and certainly none took them on as directly as Chuck D and his group.  Public Enemy has several top selling albums to their credit to include: Fear of a Black Planet (1990), It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back (1988), The Enemy Strikes Black (1991), and Rebirth of a Nation (2007).  Recently VH1 rated Fight the Power as the number one hip-hop song in history.

In addition to being a rapper, Chuck D is also an author and a radio personality and has continued to support pro-black causes in the U.S. and worlwide.  Chuck D has never wavered in his pursuit to teach black people and all people the truth about life, how to uplift oneself in society and what's going on in "the game" and how to overcome.

Why They Inspire:

Chuck D had something to say and he said it - without fear of repercussions from the media, corporate executives, or the radio. He didn't make music to make money, he made it to spread "the word". He has always had a strong pro-black positive message without being anti-white. The only thing he is 'anti' is the unfair practices of corporation and the established "powers that be".

In Their Own Words:

"There are too many leaders anointed because they have a public voice - television, radio, or record, or whatever. That even includes myself. In the past, I'd say, 'Don't anoint me when you can anoint yourself.'" - Chuck D
