Bridging the Digital Divide for our Black Youth – One Economy

Digital Connectors LogoClearly technology is here to stay.  Our computing capacity continues to increase exponentially, and more of our basic necessities are based on the use of a computer.  We rely on computers (and the chips that power them) to power our cars, manage our money, and keep our businesses functioning properly.  Of course we are all keenly aware that communication in the world today would grind to a halt without the Internet, email, cell phones and other mobile devices.  To function in today’s society you must know how to use technology to your advantage.  Likewise, to find employment you must possess knowledge of how to use computers and the software that powers them.  In the U.S. too many black youth today are still behind in their understanding and use of technology even as progress is made in bridging the digital divide.

The digital divide refers to a knowledge gap between two groups relative to their understanding of technology and how to use it.  It also covers the gap in access to technology for those in low income areas who have little or no access to broadband or other technology connectivity.  Over the past 20 years the digital divide between black and white youth has steadily begun to decrease, which is vital in relation to the financial success of our youth.  According to the U.S. Department of Labor jobs in the rapidly growing information technology sector pay almost 80 percent more than the average private sector wage, but as stated in the Pew Intenet Home Broadband 2010 African American and Hispanic households are still less likely to have Internet access in their home.

Digital Divide black YouthOne organization that is helping to bridge the digital divide here and abroad is the One Economy Corporation.   One Economy is a non-profit organization that is dedicated to using technology to connect underserved communities to the technology of the 21st century.  In addition to helping to bring broadband into the homes of low-income people, One Economy also offers training and employment programs for the youth in these communities to help prepare them for life as well as potential employment in the field of technology.  One Economy has been around for over 10 years and has initiatives and learning programs internationally as well as all across the U.S.  A program that may be of particular interest to you and your children is the Digital Connectors Program.

In partnership with Comcast, One Economy has developed the Digital Connectors Program that serves to educate low income youth on computer use, programming, networking and general literacy.  Graduates of the Digital Connectors Program receive awards of recognition as well as a new laptop and a digital camera.  The Digital Connectors Program is in place in several states throughout the U.S. and has received high praise from graduates, the business community and the federal government.
