It’s the first of the month. Maybe you just got paid. In any event you are looking for a little socializing and some partying and you’re not sure where to go. Instead of going to a local nightclub or a bar, consider attending a First Friday Event.
First Fridays are networking and social events that happen on the first Friday of each month. The concept was started in New Jersey in 1987 and currently First Friday events are held in over 30 cities across the U.S.
The concept is fairly simple, the early part of the evening (anywhere from 5 to 9) is reserved for networking with business owners, local shops, etc. Some First Friday events will include a street fair, fashion show, or other forms of entertainment during the networking hours. After the networking portion of the evening is over, the party begins complete with your standard fare of alcohol, music, and plenty of party people.
First Friday events generally attract a good quality of people: beautiful black women and handsome black men all well-dressed and professional. If you want to see what the crowds are like you can visit the New Jersey or Bay Area First Friday website where they generally have many pictures of past events.
First Friday events are held in over 30 cities across the U.S.
The First Friday of the Bay Area flagship event is the First Fridays White Party in August, which attracts over 3,000 people each year. It is the number one social event for African-Americans in Northern California.
Many cities have adopted the First Friday concept to have large street fairs. For example, Las Vegas has a “First Friday” downtown event that attracts 5,000 – 10,000 visitors on average and encompasses more than 20 city blocks. These types of events are not the African-American networking parties described in this article but still may be fun to attend.
Dress with style (no saggy jeans) and bring your business cards. Remember, you can find some great networking opportunities if you are on top of your game.
