Burgers and French Fries with Carrots

The Basics:

Meals on a BudgetCost: $5.90, Prep Time: 30 minutes

Ingredients

1 lb ground beef, 4 potatoes, 1 bag carrots, 1 pack hamburger buns (8), 24oz cooking oil

Note: Optional burger toppings are lettuce, tomato, onions, cheese, ketchup and mustard, which are all on the grocery list.

Cooking Instructions

Burgers – 4 (10 minutes)

Remove 1 lb ground beef from its package and sprinkle with salt and pepper. Get large frying pan/skillet. Spray with cooking spray and turn heat on medium high.

Form ground beef into 4 quarter pound patties and place in skilllet. Cook on one side for about 5 minutes.

Flip burgers over and cook for an additional 2-5 minutes until done to your preference (medium well, well done, etc.).

Tip: If you are following the AfroDaddy shopping list you are using lean ground beef so there is no need to press the burgers in the pan. If you do, you will let all the juices out and your burgers will be dry.

Afrodaddy tipTip: When the burgers are done let them "rest" for a minute or two before eating.  This will allow the juices to redistribute in the meat and they will be more juicy when you eat them.

French Fries (15 minutes)

Get large skillet or pan, place on stove on medium high heat, and fill halfway with vegetable oil (do not overfill skillet, as oil expands when hot).

Wash 4 potatoes and pat dry thoroughly (Make sure potatoes are dry as oil and water will cause popping and splatter).

Slice potatoes into french fry strips.

When oil is hot place french fries in pan and fry for 5 minutes or so (until golden brown)

Take a plate and line with paper towels (4 or 5 sheets)

Take french fries out of pan and place on lined plate.

Season with garlic salt and pepper immediately.

Note: you may have to do this in 2 batches depending on how big your skillet is.

Carrots (2 minutes)

The carrots are raw and should be served that way to maintain their crunch.  Just take them out of the bag and distribute on the dinner plates.  If want to warm them a little to take the chill off (they should have been in your refrigerator), place them in the microwave for a minute or two.
