Paula Patton has spent most of her life around the entertainment industry (she grew up across the street from the 20th Century Fox lot), but she didn’t make her debut in the field until relatively late in her life by today’s industry standards. Paula’s first foray into the business came in the form of producing PBS documentaries shortly after her graduation from the University of Southern California summer program. This taste of being behind the camera was a self-professed enjoyable one, but she soon realized that she wanted to be in front of the camera and we are glad that she made that decision.
Within three years after taking acting lessons in LA she landed starring roles in the films Hitch in 2005 and Idlewild in 2006. Also in 2006 she played the female lead in Déjà Vu opposite Denzel Washington. Paula has also starred in the 2008 film Swing Vote, but it was her appearance in her husband Robin Thicke’s video “Lost Without You” that really caught the attention of millions of new African American men and women. The combination of the wildly popular soul song (performed by the little known and white Robin Thicke) with the beautiful black woman as the lead in the video created a buzz that still resonates today. This career boosting appearance continued to advance her career and led to her role in the 2009 movie Precious where she received great critical acclaim for her work to include best supporting actress nominations from the Black Reel and NAACP Image Awards.
Paula Patton shows no signs of slowing down although she recently had a baby with her husband Robin Thicke in 2010. She is slated to be the lead in Mission Impossible 4. We hope to see more of this beautiful black woman in this role and many others in the future.
"I don’t know who’s behind anything. I don’t know if there’s some big master plan. I try not to have too many opinions; I just marvel at the world we live in" - Paula Patton in 2008 Esquire Magazine interview
