Yesterday was Mother’s Day and I like many other men made the obligatory call to my mother to wish her the best.  As most men who have children know, Mother’s Day gradually morphs into “Grandmother’s Day” as the ones they want to see and talk to are your children rather than you.  This of course is fine as grandchildren are cute and cuddly and we have long since passed that stage.  It warms my heart to be able to share my children with my mother and I am very fortunate to have given her a grandchild while she is young enough to enjoy him and watch him grow up.

For all the men who have a mother who is alive and well I submit to you that your mother should be revered not only on Mother’s Day, but every day.  Your mother has done so much for you simply by carrying you for 9 months and birthing you into this world.  A mother’s love is unshakeable and there are probably many times in your life where your mother supported you when no one else would.  It is easy to take for granted that love and support, but I reach out to all of my brothers out there not to do so.   There are not many relationships in life that will last for life, and the relationship with your mother is one that will, and it should improve over time and not diminish.  As our parents get older they need our love and support more than they did when we were children.

Personally I am a long way from “getting old”, but I know that my parents are much closer than I.  Naturally they are more reflective on a life full of ups and downs and trials and tribulations.  As they put their lives in perspective, their children can be a foundation of support and love that they can look at from day one through today.  We want our mothers to feel confident that they can look to tomorrow and feel that same comfort; knowing that their children still love them as much as ever and that their grandchildren are just the next generation of love that will fill their lives from now until the hereafter.

So for all the mothers out there (including my own) I want to wish you a happy “after mother’s day” and a happy “after, after mother’s day” too!
