Texas To End Weekend Lunches For Prisoners

They say everything is bigger in Texas. But you can scratch out prisoner's stomachs from that list.

After doing away with last meals for death row inmates, the state of Texas has also done away with weekend lunches for its prisoners. Since April inmates have only been served lunch Monday through Friday. On weekends they eat breakfast between 5 a.m. and 7 a.m. and aren't fed again until 4 p.m.

The meal restriction is a part of an effort to cut nearly $3 million in food-related expenses from the 2011 fiscal year budget of the Texas Department of Criminal Justice. In addition to ending weekend lunch, they are also replacing carton milk with powdered milk and replacing hamburger and hot dog buns with regular sliced bread.  Read the rest of the article here.

No one is defending criminal activity, but we must remember that everyone in prison is not a rapist or a killer.  Prisoners are human beings that don’t deserve to be starved to death or otherwise mistreated.
